One of the most popular day trips from Madrid, Toledo is about 1 hr away via the high speed AVE trains. The trek from the train station into the city proper takes about 1 to 2 hours on foot (regardless what Frommer’s might say), and will bring you across the Tagus River. The main sights are also on an mountaintop, so those in a hurry should definitely take the bus instead of hoofing it.
