The Piazza della Repubblica is a popular meeting place in Florence which has a very artsy vibe to it, perhaps due to the insouciant carousel and the chic patrons of the Giubbe Rosse cafe.
The arch that leads to the square reads:

Translated, it reads:
The ancient centre of the city
restored from age-old squalor
to new life
