Elephants have always been part of Thailand’s culture and heritage. Through the ages, they have been instruments of war, transport, labor and entertainment. It is not uncommon for tourists to watch them perform at Elephant shows, where they amaze the crowds with gentle grace and agility. A certain patience and nobility of presence, if you will. And yet, the darker stories those eyes may hide can chill you to the bone.
