All That Glitters

The altarpiece of Seville Cathedral is a gigantic retablo which depicts 36 scenes from the Old Testament and the life of Christ. The craftsman Pierre Dancart spent over 40 years working on this altarpiece. A statue of Santa Maria de la Sede, the patron saint of the church, adorns the front of the altarpiece. The sheer amount of gold brings to mind the movie Immortals.

  1. I know a little about carving and sculpture having tried my hand at it. This is astonishing. Even beyond that as the layman can have little understanding of the patience, precision and craftsmanship required to create such an intricate and complex design.

    • A little? You sir are too humble. The altar was actually much taller than a landscape photo could capture. I believe this was the sculptor’s life work. Took over 40 years to complete.
