Sydney Rocks

The Rocks is a touristy and historic area in Sydney’s city centre, near Sydney Harbour and Circular Quay. Its name is a result of the sandstone used to construct the original buildings, way back during its roots as a slum. Throughout the late 1950s, rejuvenation of the area became a bone of contention between long-time residents (who worried over being ejected from the area) and the government (which wanted to demolish old buildings). Today, behind the glittering veneer of the eateries and craft shops, away from the more visible areas, one can still see hints of its tumultuous history.
