Kiyomizu-dera – for many, this UNESCO World Heritage is the raison d’être behind a trip to Kyoto. Its name, Kiyomizu, or clear water, stems from the Otowa waterfall which runs under the main complex and ends with three streams of water flowing into a pond. Visitors are welcome to drink from the flowing water, which is believed to grant various boons.
The many verandas of the complex offer fantastic views over the city, and of the main hall itself. Best times to visit are during Sakura season and autumn (the latter more so), before 10am when the busloads of visitors arrive.

Ahh. The jishu shrine. You’re lucky if you don’t meet the queue of visitors right at the steps! 🙂
Actually I didn’t find the queue! Perhaps it was too hot even for the most obstinate! 😉
I actually only managed to visit the second time I was there. The queue extended beyond the stairs!
