Those Not Forgotten

On the grounds of Hase-dera, a Buddhist temple in Kamakura, one will find scores of tiny smiling Jizō statues lined up neatly. Jizō, or Ojizō-sama as he is also known, is a well-loved Japanese deity regarded as the guardian protector of children, especially those who pass before their parents. Grieving parents sometimes dress up the statues in children’s clothing or bibs, entreating Ojizō-sama to protect and guide their lost ones in the afterlife.
