Statues of Jesus Christ and his apostles greet visitors to the Santa Maria de Montserrat abbey. Although they don’t take up a substantial part of the facade, I find my attention inexorably drawn towards the group of statues. The statues were carved in the early nineteen-hundreds, and appear to retain a lot of its original details. I wouldn’t be surprised if they have been previously restored. Peaking closer at the second picture, you can see that the sculptor, Agapit Vallmitjana, has left his mark. Each statue stands on top of a pedestal with the words “A Vallmitjana”.
