The Pingxi Railway line, which links several small districts in Northern Taipei, is probably the most famous railway to non-locals. It owes much of its popularity to a 2011 film, You Are the Apple of My Eye. In the film (which is packed with 1980s nostalgia from start to end), the photogenic but star-crossed couple of the show takes an oh-so-cute road trip, which included walking adorably on a picturesque section of the rail. In practice however, people who attempt this invariably look like clumsy penguins learning to tap-dance on a metal grill. Fortunately, sections of the railway are indeed quite beautiful, so there’s something to do even for those who choose to remain grounded.
