Instead of joining the masses and sending off a sky lantern at Shifen, I spent my time walking around and people-watching instead. That’s more creepy-sounding than it actually is. It was pretty charming to see people from all corners of the world, young and old, laboriously draw up their lanterns. Incidentally, the nearby district of Pingxi is where this practice is said to originate from. Shifen is however, much more popular during normal days, probably because of its location. The annual sky lantern festival around February, however, takes place in Pingxi.
