Pier 39 at night is a very different creature.
The maddening crowds are gone, and the few who remain move with a purposeful stride. Most of the retail stores and restaurants, catering to the hordes of tourists, are shuttered for the night. Instead of a hubbub of laughter and chatter, all you hear is the occasional gull, and sometimes, the soft lapping of the waves not far away. The colors and lights are still there of course- but everything else seems to be have quietened- exhaled, in the calm of the night.
Pier 39 at night is a very different creature, and the more beautiful for it.
